WANG Wen-Ping’s painting takes the body as an entry point into desire, pressure, and self-alienation within modern life. His images often begin with recognizable scenes rendered through realist techniques, yet their space, light, and human relationships generate a subtle psychological unease. The body is not merely depicted; it becomes a theatre where social condition and inner consciousness converge.

Artist Profile

WANG Wen-Ping (b.1960) was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Chinese Culture University in 1983 and received an MFA from Long Island University in New York in 1989. Recognized by the Lion Art New Artist Award in 1977, Wang first emerged through his strong command of realist painting and later developed a diverse, experimental practice during a formative period of Taiwanese contemporary art in the 1980s.

Wang’s practice is not confined to a single medium or fixed form. Moving from realist painting to abstraction, from canvas to installation and three-dimensional work, he has continually explored how art may respond to perception, desire, and the condition of existence. His works often place ambiguous, tense bodily gestures within everyday settings. Through compressed space, fragmented bodies, and subdued tonalities, the inner unease, isolation, and desire of modern life are transformed into visible psychological landscapes.

Wang’s major solo exhibitions include “Read My Lips: WANG Wen-Ping Solo Exhibition” at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in 2011, “Heat Wave: WANG Wen-Ping Solo Exhibition” at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 2003, “1994–1995 Solo Exhibition” at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 1995, “Escape from the City” at Eslite Gallery in 1992, and a solo exhibition at HUTCHINS Gallery in New York in 1989.

In In the Bath, the bathroom becomes a closed and intimate space. The figures are placed between mirror, wall, and bodily silhouette. The viewpoint positions the viewer both outside the scene and uncomfortably near its psychological tension. Wang transforms a moment of everyday bathing into a pictorial narrative about looking, the body, and self-consciousness.
