Juan-Carlos Quintana’s works open a visual space between reason and fantasy through vivid color, exaggerated form, and playful narrative energy. Animals, signs, and objects transform and intersect within his sculptures. What appears humorous and light-hearted also carries a challenge to fixed aesthetic orders and conventional views of reality.

Artist Profile

Juan-Carlos Quintana (b.1963) is a Spanish-French artist. His practice may be read as a contemporary translation of the Don Quixote spirit in Cervantes: an idealism that continues to question the world through imagination, passion, and belief, even while recognizing the limits of reality. His works move between reason and madness, playfulness and critique, reality and fantasy, constructing imaginative spaces filled with narrative tension.

His artistic lineage may be traced to the sensory force and dramatic tension found in the works of Spanish masters such as Goya and Velázquez. During his years in Paris, he was also inspired by the CoBrA movement, absorbing its subconscious spontaneity, primal vitality, and anti-academic spirit. The light, allegory, and human observation of classical painting are transformed in his work into an intuitive and instinctive language of form, while the freedom and improvisational energy of the avant-garde are distilled into a vivid, unrestrained, and difficult-to-define visual system.

In his sculptural practice, the materiality of the medium is central to Quintana’s expression. He does not treat wood as a passive support, but responds to its inherent curves, grain, and original form, drawing out the movement, rhythm, and vitality concealed within it. Through boundless imagination and a childlike intuition, the artist carves, assembles, and paints wooden structures, endowing them with animal-like spirit, theatrical personality, and narrative intensity.

Saturated and daring color gives his work its highly recognizable visual force. Strong fields of blue, red, yellow, green, and black move across the wooden surface, allowing natural grain, hand-painted gesture, and hallucinatory imagery to overlap. This uninhibited experiment with color echoes the primal vitality and expressive freedom advocated by the CoBrA movement, allowing the works to retain a distinctly avant-garde character beneath their humor and innocence.

To encounter Quintana’s work is to temporarily set aside academic frameworks and rational judgment. His strange, absurd, and sometimes comic creatures are far from mere jokes; they are the artist’s call to our instinctive capacity for perception. Through pure color, raw form, and fearless imagination, the works invite viewers to return to the origin of seeing: to feel before logic is formed, to imagine beyond established rules, and to recognize another face of reality through humor.
