Artist Profile
CHEN Che (b.1937) was born in Douliu, Yunlin, Taiwan, and came of age during a formative period in the modernization of Taiwanese art. He entered the Department of Fine Arts at Taiwan Provincial Normal University in 1956 and graduated in 1960 with first honors in Western painting. Influenced by Liao Chi-Chun’s color sensibility and trained rigorously in drawing at Li Shih-Chiao’s studio, Chen developed a pictorial language grounded in structure, expressive color, and disciplined observation.
Rather than following a purely abstract direction, Chen often begins from the lineage of Post-Impressionism, dismantling and reconstructing visual experience through color and form. Geometric divisions, color blocks, and wandering lines compress space, light, and shape into a heightened chromatic field. The subject remains recognizable, yet inner sensation unfolds through layered brushwork, creating a rhythm that moves between observation and poetic transformation.
Chen taught for many years at Chiayi Senior High School, making a lasting contribution to art education, and received a national award for outstanding art education in 1974. After retiring in 1994, he continued to focus on painting. His subjects—flowers, still lifes, figures, animals, and everyday scenes—are rendered with bright color and gentle humor, as if recording the passing moments of daily life. Through ordered complexity and layered texture, his paintings reveal a natural ease, an open spirit, and a refined sense of life.
