LEOPARD

Speed held in form, strength refined into a free and alert sculptural presence.

Scroll

Leopard is one of Shih Li-Jen’s enduring subjects. The animal is widely recognized for its ferocity and agility, yet the faintly smiling leopard belongs uniquely to his artistic world.

In this bronze sculpture, hard edges and faceted planes define the body, drawing speed into structure. The elongated torso, forward-reaching posture, and tightened limbs allow strength to emerge with clarity, while also giving the work a distinct industrial character.

Shih does not overload the leopard with symbolism, nor does he insist on its violence. He preserves its alertness, flexibility, and wild vitality, while releasing it from human projections. What stands before the viewer is neither a domesticated image nor a mythic emblem, but a living presence revealed in freedom.

Alongside sculpture, Shih Li-Jen has continued to explore the leopard through painting. While the sculpture emphasizes structure, volume, and momentum, the paintings move closer to intuition and emotional resonance. The leopard appears at times submerged in dark fields, at times crouching or turning back, carrying a sense of stillness, distance, and inward tension.

These paintings are neither supplementary illustrations nor simple preparatory studies. Through repeated appearances across media, the leopard gradually becomes one of the artist’s enduring motifs. The transition from painting to sculpture refines the figure further, allowing Leopard to arrive in bronze with greater precision and completeness.

The force of Leopard does not rely on theatrical aggression, but on structural precision and restraint. The neck, spine, limbs, and tail form a continuous directional line that gives the sculpture its forward-driving tension. Faceted surfaces intensify the movement of light across the bronze, embedding velocity not only in posture, but also in the rhythm of material and volume.

Shih Li-Jen’s approach to animals is never limited to naturalistic description. Instead, it opens a renewed way of seeing life. Leopard is neither a narrated allegory nor a domesticated emblem. It remains agile and alert, yet carries an ease that comes from release. In this way, the sculpture speaks not only of wildlife, but also of interdependence between human beings and nature, and of self-reflection through that encounter.
