JIANG Miao

Through the daily accumulation of layered colour fields and the cutting open of thresholds, light slowly emerges from within the painting. The tension between stillness and motion forms her abstract grammar and brings an East Asian sensibility into an international visual language. Gold Prize in Mixed Media, Florence Biennale 2025.

Artist Statement

Jiang Miao’s practice centres on layering and incision, turning time itself into a visible spiritual density. Colour in her paintings is not merely a surface phenomenon, but a hidden source of light embedded in structure: each act of covering and revealing becomes a conversation with an inner order.
By continuously building up abstract fields of colour, she allows the process of painting to intertwine with the passage of time. Depth and brightness finally appear where the surface is cut open. The work is at once painting and sculpture, transforming a still image into a quiet rhythm of breathing.
For Jiang, colour is not only a visual event but an extension of energy. Using the blade in place of the brush, she lets latent rhythms become traces of consciousness — light trembles along the incised lines, time flows beneath the pigments, and form coexists with the formless.
This logic of making resonates with the East Asian notion of “qi” — an energy that does not need to be ostentatiously displayed, but rises naturally from within the structure. Each work is a breath of time and a silent meditation, where material and spirit slowly permeate one another.
Her art invites viewers to experience an “inner time” that does not depend on narrative, but emerges from the sheer fact of being. The light she paints does not belong to external illumination; it is the faint glow of awareness itself, guiding us back toward a spiritual homeland.
