King Kong Rhino |

The "King Kong Rhino" is a magnificent work of art located in Taipei's Xinyi District, standing tall at a remarkable 8.88 meters. This imposing sculpture, situated in front of the Bank of China, serves as a celebratory symbol of Taiwan's successful economic growth and development.

The rhinoceros has long been revered in Chinese mythology as a sacred animal, embodying the traits of the mythical creature, the Qilin. The artist, Shih Li-Jen, has made the rhinoceros his central creative theme, drawing upon its symbolic representation of auspiciousness and good fortune. The Rhino family is depicted as a symbol of familial harmony, a theme that is deeply personal and emotive for Shih Li-Jen.

In creating the "Steel Rhino," Shih Li-Jen has employed a unique fusion of science fiction and realism, donning the rhinoceros in futuristic armor and rivets, and expressing the sculpture in a modernist, futuristic style. The use of stainless steel as the primary material, with its silver mirrored finish, adds a sleek and sophisticated feel to the work, while the rhinoceros horn is crafted from titanium alloy, utilizing contemporary techniques to create a cohesive and harmonious whole. The end result is a work of art that exudes strength, power, and majesty, with a sense of childlike wonder that embodies the highest ideals of traditional Chinese aesthetics.

The reserved expression of the artist is visible in the work, showcasing the distinctive spirit and inner meaning of the Eastern artist. The sculpture, as a public outdoor work of art, harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding environment and is endowed with a sense of social relevance and public significance, almost like a grand monument.

The great Chinese writer, Lu Xun, once described the sculptures of Chinese culture as possessing a "deep and profound" power. Shih LI-Jen's "King Kong Rhino" series perfectly exemplifies this powerful spiritual and artistic concept. With over ten different styles of rhinoceroses created to date, each one manages to evoke a unique sense of wonder and deeply resonate with its audience.
