Rhino in Nature, Circle of Life

The glistening golden leaves strewn across the earth seem to symbolize the cyclical nature of human existence, characterized by perpetual renewal and regeneration. Nestled within this dense tapestry of fallen foliage are the lifelike rhinoceros sculptures of the esteemed artist, Shih Li-Jen, which appear to draw the viewer into their natural domain. Through his evocative installation, Shih Li-Jen prompts us to ponder the question: "Is civilization teetering on the edge of extinction?" He aspires to inspire contemplation of the intricate relationships between life and death, humanity and nature, tradition and modernity, East and West, ultimately expressing his deep concern for humanity's ultimate destiny. This installation strives to evoke empathy and stimulate the soul by inviting viewers to contemplate their place in the world and the interconnectedness of all things. This captivating artwork was showcased as a part of the 2017 Venice Biennale.

In addition to the sculptures, this installation incorporates a potent sonic element. As visitors enter the exhibition space, they are met with the thunderous blast of a shotgun. This unexpected sound jolts and disorients the viewer, compelling them to confront the harsh realities of the world around them. Through this jarring experience, artist Shih Li-Jen intends to forge a visceral connection with the audience, stirring their emotions and engendering profound reflection on the precarious state of our civilization and the pressing need to safeguard the natural world.
