Spirit and Strength
Understanding the Rhino sculpture of Shih Li-Jen | Peng Feng

To the northeast of Beijing 5th Ring Road where Found Museum situated, there is a magnificent bronze sculpture, King Kong Rhino, oversized, firmly rigid, and pure luster. Under the pressure of this nearly nine meters tall giant, it is hardly to catch its eye only if you sit down under its legs. However, it never make me scared, for it is so attractive that I can't stop getting closer to approach it and appreciate all the details. The Rhino King Kong is enormous yet grim, and a friendly and amiable kind.

Shih Li-Jen established Modern Art Gallery in Taichung and Found Museum in Beijing, and he has been engaged in art curation and management for more than 30 years. His gallery has represented many internationally renowned artists like A. Rodin, B. César, P. Hiquily, F. Arman, M. Matton, Chu Teh-Chun, and Liu Kuo-Sung, and has curated some very important exhibitions that are far-reaching impact like "Impression from France", the Chinese-French culture exchange program, and "The Gate of Hell vs. Love", a sculpture exhibition of Rodin. He has inherited art creation by nature even he's never been to any art school. Nonetheless, he has never stopped art creation and educated himself by means of influences from his close friendship with art masters to unveil himself the mystery of art. He has focused on making rhino sculptures for a decade and his experimentation and exploration has led him to design and create over hundreds of works, among which the giant King Kong Rhino was his best achievement.

Why does Shih focus his attention on rhino with such great passion? Is he an environmentalist who has wholehearted mercy on rhino? Or is he a trendsetter who has found his own youth again and counts the "Rhino in Love" as a personal favor? All the possibilities should be taken into account. However, there is an essential factor that can't be ignored: Shih's admiration and pursuits of profound Chinese culture. He has been to many museums all around the world and was attracted and influenced deeply by the splendid civilization originated from ancient Chinese. He knows details of remaining art treasures especially the ancient bronze sculptures catching his most attention, and among which he is particularly fond of rhino statues which are appreciated a formidable reputation among all Chinese bronze ware. As well as elephants, Rhinos were also considered one of deity beasts which mixed reality and imagination a connection. Han Fei-Zi once defined this animal, elephant, and explained the word "Xiang": It was hardly to see a live elephant in life. Only the chance they found a skeleton, so they could picture a resembled image based on elephant's bones. That is to say, those who infer from his own perceptions to speculate, the conduct can be called "Xiang". (Equates to "elephant" or "imagination" in English) The word, "Xiang", consists of both the real elephant and the surreal imagination. Rhino belongs to tropical creature as well as elephant, and one of rare and precious animals on earth for people living in mainland. Thus, people have pictured indefinite illusion upon the endangered rhinos. Furthermore, rhino is much more ethereal and supernatural when it comes to surreal element that apart from elephant which connected real and surreal with visual image, psionic rhino was telepathic. Comparing with the spiritual effect, visual sense is too real to be unreal even it is already the highest sense. We preferred to use imagination to be acquainted with unknown, and the deity rhino was for emotional resonance beyond the time and space. Because of surreal rhino and elephant, they were not cast as they really look like by ancient people, and more often they resembled a model replacing them, despite that we have nothing to do to realize what it was symbolized the feeling for the symbol still remains the same. Just image that if there is a huge lifelike real rhino standing right in front of us, how scary will it be!

Eventually Shih accomplished the evolution for artistic rhino from creatural rhino that also transform our inner fear into a positive affirmation. The strength has been again strengthened through the huge volume and greater weight. The ancients worshiped rhino which is not only for the persistent strength but also the symbol of the power of illusory super-nature. Shih's keen on rhino sculptures have been lasting with perseverance and consistency and always been glad with it that reflect the same strength on his own. Notwithstanding he has had persistent strength insisted, he controlled the mighty into the great space of the rhino. His personal sense of humor and warmness are a plus and turning the strength from outward into humble that encourage the whole sculpture much more majestic and dignified.

Therefore, we can see symbolic duality from the King Kong Rhino: One for spiritual communication which is an affection of irresistibility and selflessness beyond time and space resorting to deity rhino. The poem quoted from a well-known poet, Li Shangyin, "For bodies no fluttering side by side of splendid phoenix wings, for hearts the one minute thread from root to tip of the magic horn." expressed a kind of love which is too good to be true in real life. King Kong Rhino magnifies this secluded and misty love to real and forces us to react. On other hand its bulk gives an impregnable effect. If we consider bull as a symbol of great strength, then it is just a lightweight in front of the living rhino. As compares to the King Kong Rhino which is a giant several times the size and weight of living rhino, it is just a featherweight.

Among the rhino sculptures, there is a symbolic index of reality and fantasy perfectly combining altogether. Love is fantasy and strength is for real. Love encourages strength growing more powerful, and the strength helps love extending boundless. I think this is the main reason why I won't be scared in front of the King Kong Rhino. For what I see is not just a rhino, nor a King Kong, it is a combination of magnificent strength and profound love. An ancient wisdom mentioned that the writing mirrors the writer. Indeed, and not only writing mirrors, but also everything we do and pay attention will be branded on us. I am merely superstitious and believe that the name fits a person who was named and might implicate his personality and how his career goes. Perhaps the strength and the love inherent in sculptures of Shih are destined right in when he was named Li (strength) –Len (love).

Compare to classical art that often expresses toward positive attitude, the critical contemporary art jams with too much perverted and decadent negativity. The series of rhino sculpture are both positively expressing ideas in a good way and get rid of squaring and modular classic art and put vivid contemporary symbols on them. Shih indeed shows what contemporary art is.
